Looking ahead,what crops could we put in the polytunnel that we could crop/would survive over the winter? We thought some spuds,also salads,anything else? Any specific varieties?

Pak Choy, Kailan, Mizuma, Spinach ( Bordeaux F1 Hybrid is a good winter variety).

I'm going to try these too, plus Red Russian Kale on Katieowl's advice, and some french beans, carrots, lettuces etc.

I usually sow carrots in the PT around mid July and they do fantastically. I hope to try some other stuff this year as well to try and make up for the lack of produce I'm currently getting from the drought like veg patch

To the veg listed above, I would add lambs lettuce and spring onions.

My winter veg list (for the greenhouse) is as follows:

Spinach - Samish F1
Lettuce - Winter Density
Orsay
Winter Gem
Kale - Curly Scarlet
Radiccio - Treviso precoce mesola
Land Cress - fire and Ice
Oriental mustard - ruby streaks
Lambs Lettuce - Gaia
Favor

Untested the whole lot, but I am determined to crack a winter supply of leaves, following reading about what the Nearing's (The original Good Life couple) managed under glass in a Vermont winter! I've got all these seeds ready to plant in a month or so, to get a good start - now all I need is daughter's BF to put the new green house up!

Beets, chard, spinach, lettuce, kale, just about any asian green & corn mache are all great overwintering crops. If they can survive here, you'll be fine over there across the pond. Row covers for the coldest nights. Kind of a funny thing to be talking about a week or two after we had our hottest high 90s days....

Perpetual spinach beet - much less fussy than spinach. Another vote for beetroot and chard. Things like rapa senza testa - non-heading, quick-growing brassicas. Mustard greens

Next job to go through my seed box and see what I can find!
