Hi,

Does anyone know of any mobile abattoirs that visit North Wales, ideally Anglesey?

We have been planning for months to get a few rare breed pigs to rear for pork. Initially for ourselves and friends/family and if successful, expanding gradually. We went on the Pig Paradise course, which was a brilliant experience and thought we had everything sorted and ready to get our pigs in the spring.

Unfortunately we visited the only butcher on Anglesey who still also slaughter livestock and they told us they were too busy for a business on our scale and they also only did "white" pigs.

With the neares abattoir now nearly two hours away our plans are therefore in tatters. The only thing I can think of if it could be possible to use a mobile abattoir, maybe with others in a similar situation.

Thanks,

Aled

Not as far as I'm aware. We were told the same things about white pigs and so had to take ours to Denbigh.

Someone should kit one out; given the amount of potential customers they ought to do quite well out of it.

Iirc each 'site' has to be constructed and registered so that the concept isn't as 'mobile' as it could be. Richard W will probably provide the definitive answer.

Rob's right. As far as I can tell there are still no licensed legal mobile slaughter houses or men in the UK. You will find the odd person that will kill for you if its just for you & your family.

You also have one near St Asaph as well as the Denby one.

The Anglsey one also only does small (30-40kg I think) pigs.

I always thought the regs were too draconian, my old boss claimed he wanted his own slaughterhouse for pigs but it would have cost him a million to comply with the regs - but after reading about a guy killing a range of animals for his farmshop on-farm and legally, I spent an evening combing through the regs and didn't find anything too horrific really, it seems like there just has be a suitable restraining pen for the animal to be killed out of sight of the other animals, and the person doing it has to be set up and ready to kill in the appropriate way and have a slaughterman's license, which isn't *that* expensive. You'd have to pay to dispose of the waste properly too, of course. Maybe I missed something, or maybe the tough bit comes when the animal's dead and ready to be cut up?

thanks for the replies. Gutted that plan has bitten the dust, although glad we checked before getting the pigs.

It pays to check even when there is a local abattoir---because of the unexpectedly long waiting list we are going to take 2 much bigger pigs than we intended. I'm nostalgic for the days a chap on the village just called and dispatched next doors[and other people's] pigs as and when---seems much more instant and humane.

Can you not still do this if its for home use only? I hope so, we've just got a few soay sheep to rear on that basis...

Again Richard will have the answer but I think that under the home kill exemption they may shoot but then take no part in the dressing, so it appeals to few people...
