Still no where near as good as last season. At the end of July 2009 I was picking baskets like this:

Interesting to see how this autumn goes. I have a theory that if we get a long, dry summer (which we've had done here) it's a bumper autumn. Well, as long as we get rain!

What time do you go out in the morning - I went out at 8.30 on Sunday and found that someone had already beaten me to it

The weekends can be bad but it does depend where you go. I have some spots in the New Forest where I have never seen anyone else picking.

Weekdays, Wednesday or Thursdays, are usually the best. That gives time for things that are too small to pick on the weekend get to a decent size and, of course, there are fewer people about. In the autumn (September, October and November) I have been known to go out as the sun is coming up - i.e. I leave the house in the dark!

The thing is you never quite know what it'll be like. Last season, when July was good, I never saw anyone picking. I guess that they thought it was too early. December was also very good for Winter Chanterelle even though we'd had plenty of frosts by then. Again I never saw anyone picking. I guess people thought it was too late. In fact in January I picked 1.5kg in the snow

Found a young Cep in the New Forest yesterday too. Several Green-cracking Russulas also. Lets hope it is a sign of things to come.
