Just been out round here and found half a dozen, still seems much too dry for many to appear.

I got about a dozen good ones today. But, yes, I agree that it's still too dry down in the New Forest. Although we've had rain in August it hasn't been enough. If you go out in the Forest you can seen that many of the ditches (that are normally full of water all year round) are dry and rock hard. Many of the boggy areas are dry too and the open bits of grass are still brown. In other words the water table is low.

However, this all might change very soon. There is a Met Office weather warning (heavy rain and gales) for tonight and Monday morning for the south and south east. If we get thios then things should start to really happen.

Having said all of this the fields are producing much more. Lots of horse mushrooms, field mushrooms and fairy rings to keep me happy!

How long do Chanterelles take to grow? I picked a couple of good sized ones today, but there were about half a dozen little nubs about the size of the end on my little finger too. Shall I go back tomorrow or give them a couple of days?

as a rough guide you allow 1or 2 days for ceps and 1or 2 weeks for chanterelles, good weather conditions can make a slight difference.By the way Mandy have you got any ceps yet?we are teeming with them in Thetford forest ,finding them with beech oak and sweet chestnut right now.

For chanterelles - how long is a bit of string? They have the ability to pop up, and then if the weather is really dry, shrivel and seemingly die. Then, when the rains come they can start to grow again. I have seen them take 6 weeks to get big enough to pick in unsuitable conditions. However, if conditions are idea (warm and wet) then can come from nothing and reach maturity within a week.

I found my fist parasol mushroom today. In my view they can be just as good as ceps - at least they hardly ever have maggots in them!

For the late summer/autumn season things tend to fruit first in the north of the UK and move south. People were finding ceps in the north of the country at the end of June. Maybe this will be your first year that you find them. From what people are finding north of us it'll be a great season. And don't forget it's still August!
