Gosh. Ordinary brown garden snails? So how did you prep/cook them?

eta, I don't understand why it should be less acceptable than eating sea snails like winkles but it is some how.

Not ordinary garden snails. The really big roman types. Purged em for over a week then followed dpack's method - sprinkle salt over them and stir for 30 mins, boil for 30 mins. Took them out of their shells and friend them in garlic butter. Seemed to work but might be dead tomorrow!!!!!

I ate snails once, not bad, a bit mushroomy I thought.

Why though, when there are all sorts of less ugly things to be had?

I'll save snails till there's nowt else left

They were free. And tasty. And here in France it's a bit of a tradition.

I admire you BD - a *friend* once gave me some pickled sea slug to eat...

I didn't like it and have never tried anything like that ever again

Yummy! Trouble is, what with the amount of butter you tend to slurp down with them, they're probably on the banned list for those with cholesterol problems.

My kids had two dozen garden snails sauted with panchetta a dash of chili and served with salad. They loved them!

We usually have lots of these large Roman snails round here but have hardly seen any this year with the dry weather. The French called them Escargot de Bourgonne and love them. How did you prepare them? Did you purge them?

Mind you if anyone is thinking of foraging for them in the UK, they are a protected species.

I have been tempted to try snails from our garden, but I've yet to get the courage to actually do it.

roman are nice but the large garden snails are fine you just need three times as many

giant african ones are nice but need 4 hours boiling

tiny ones are ok by the pint with a pin like winkles or even shell on with the softer types

glad you enjoyed them
