Failing that, and for smaller quantities, a clean spade in a washing up bowl does a reasonable job. But, as Nick says, the more you mangle them before you press, the more juice you'll get.

Yes, I have just seen a video of someone putting apples through a shredder. I would never have thought of that, is it hygienic? How do you clean out the inside of it first? We spend all out time sterilising equipment.... It certainly looked a bloody site quicker than bashing it up with wood, which is what I have done in the past. And I only have a small juice presser, it has been bloody hard graft!

Thanks for that really helpful hint.

Hygenic....

You're aware that cider is made from about 35% sheep shit?

I just throw the apples through, collect, and press.

In Hereford. Traditional Devon recipes use 27%.

My apples are far too refined to be near sheep shit, they are from the bottom of my garden! Seriously, is it OK? I am just thinking food poisoning or something with all the things that have passed through before bearing in mind it isnt heated...I teach nursing and am rather germ conscious, I guess. Still, if everyone has done it and it hasnt caused any problems.....................

I would be slightly concerned if the shredder had just been used for yew; that aside, I wouldn't stop to think.

Ok, thats sensible, I havent got any yew, and to my memory I havent put anything poisonous through. Its all that food hygiene that has been hammered into my head.

Ill certainly give it a try. My cider mking has been hard work!

Alcohol sterilises stuff. That's why beer was safer than the water in the good old days.

I use an old sink waste disposal unit, then use a press I made using a scissor car jack.
I can easily get 5 gallons of juice that way.

Aldi have a 2800-watt shredder on sale with a 40-litre collection bin for around £90.

Unfortunately I am on my own. I tried my shredder but it didnt make stuff small enough. I am now using my grater on my food processor, which is very slow but seems to maximise the juice. Trouble is I have been making cider now for weeks and only have 7 gallons, and a kitchen on fruit flies! I am beggining to see the end though.
