Garden plant names keep changing, even quite ordinary ones. My mother was furious when they changed Montbretia to Crocosmia.

Nothofagus = southern beech is another one that is a bit confusing. Apparently it should have been Notofagus but someone put a h in it.

I wonder if that's true. Notho seems to come from nothus = fa ...

I can see her point when you're writing for learned journals, but I'd hate to lose completely some of the traditional names of plants (and animals).

herb bennett = geum urbanum or wood avens

= Blessed Herb or Colewort or Gold Star or Ram's Foot or Yellow Strawberry.

Well, it was pretty warm, and as I said, we saw lots of butterflies on the walk in to the meadow. Don't know why they weren't over the meadow.

They'll be OK. Swallows have no problem raising two broods in one summer. At least they didn't use to when I lived in a house with Swallows.

I have heard Chiff-Chaffs in the garden and in several other places, so it might just be that they haven't reached you yet. No Willow Warblers in the garden yet, though I have heard them elsewhere.

Saw a couple in the village (a mile away) last week. They don't venture out this way, except later in the year when they sometimes feed high over our trees.
