Since the onions will be larger/taller (presumably) than the garlic wouldn't it be better to have them in the centre and the garlic outside?

Well, yes, but a big lump of metal swinging at the end of a bit of power cable can make a useful weapon.

You need a good mask, I think. Don't want to be breathing in finely minced debris of whatever it is you are cutting. Make sure you get the right filter size.

Upside down, half oranges, juiced first, so hollow, will attract slugs in at the end of the night's feeding then you go down before dusk starts and oust them to their demise...

Probably from one of the Picture-winged Flies (Urophora species). The really large galls have more than one larva inside, if I understand the book correctly.
