What it says really.
We want a 'proper' ironing board.

Not a mesh one.

Preferably with a flat area for the iron to stand up on, not the wire thingy that it lies flat on & spews steam all over the room while you fold the thing that's finished & get the next item ready to iron.

I've tried googling, but there are millions out there and you don't know what they are like until you've got it home and found it's useless.

As far as I'm concerned it's what you do to cloth before you cut it out & sew it.
And what you do to seams after sewing them to make them lie nice & flat before putting the sleeves into the garment.

But apparently it has other uses - like having nicely flattened linen for a reenactment.

Go for a wooden one, there are new ones for sale now, or go for a secondhand one; I bought mine I the Sue Ryder shop in Ringwood in 1987 - still going strong, and easy to tack over another cover when it needs replacing. Think it will see me out

Must be a southern thing. I'll ask Janet, she's from St Albans.

I have had a mesh one for 40 years and we get on quite well. My mothers one was solid wood; Dad cut the tree down and made it from there, but it had the drawback that it wasn't adjustable, and it was too low for me. I gave it to the museum service as the asbestos board he used for putting the iron on was breaking up, and I thought it would be better for them to dispose of that than have to have someone in full protection kit coming to the house to remove it.

If you haven't got an ironing board what do you use for surfing down the stairs?

I thought an ironing board was one of those mystical things that people talk about but doesn't actually exist in reality - bit like rocking horse shit.
