For a start you will need at least 2,

Pigs will spot a weakness, so safe is better than cheap and cheerful.

Ok guys, the flame throwing panda is a non starter I'm sorry to say. At the moment we are looking into fencing for the pig, a neighbour (yes we are currently still living on our boat but have a small (very small 30mts) rented cottage on another island) has fenced his pig in with old pallets. Does anyone have any pig fencing ideas, cheap is what we are after as it isn't going to be a permanent fence. Also now having seriously thought about getting a pig, we have started to look into what type of pig, (bearing in mind where we live the choice might be limited). Big snouted things are what we have come up with, any ideas please....

I use an electric fence attached to two runs of galvanised nine strand fencing wire. I top it with a third strand of the nylon electric tape, but that is so I see it in the dark & don't trip over it.
You say you are going to be away next winter but between now & then you could raise two batches of wearers to pork weight or decent gilts to an age where another pig farmer would be happy to purchase them for breeding.
difficult bit is not giving them names & becoming too attached.

dpack, many thanks for that... I thought a pig was a pig, I think I might have to start interviewing these piggly pigs just to make sure I get the right one. Seriously, I am very grateful for all the input everyone has given, the flame throwing panda, though a good idea initially has now been put to one side. It really does seem a pig is the way to go, then 'deal' with it in november.... so I will be putting up a new post regarding preserving meat... but please keep the ideas coming...

dpack. He knows better, much better. And he knows where he lives. And that I can run faster than him.

Good that he knows where he lives though, even if he insists on using the longest links on the planet.

Forgot to mention when talking about the amount of bamboo to be removed, apart from the panda removal method, we have been trying to learn tomake bamboo furniture over the past few months... with varying degrees of success, if it didn't take so long there could be money to be made.

Hi, sorry, our rented cottage (shack, cold, damp, mouldy, draughty, horrible), is on Flores, our land is on Faial.

Surely a typo that Nick can run faster than him too, dpack's carrying a lot less meat pies than our Nick...
