Update IE to v9 to lessen risk of exposure to vulnerabilities (or uninstall if you can/must). Then use Chrome.

the OH hasn't found a good word processor yet, something similar to MSWord he would prefer. Though at the moment he uses Latec (sp?).

59 is quite high for a desktop CPU (laptop ones can cope with a bit more).

Make sure there's no dust or fluff cloging up the heatsink & fans.

Many Linux install CDs will run the whole OS from CD (albeit slower than a proper install). Some also have memtest86 as an option when you boot from the CD.

I think the Ubuntu install does both.

I use DropBox quite a lot to store and share file, very easy to use.

I'd recommend dropbox too, but would probably encrypt/compress the collection of files before uploading ...
