We've got our contribution to the dreaded landfill down to less than a bag a week (There's five of us, so I'm quietly pleased with that - more work to do, but we're getting there) .

The only problem I find is that towards the end of the week, it all starts to get a bit stinky.

Anyone got any tips for reducing the pong?

no tips, except that bicarbonate of soda or white vinegar can help neutralise odours (not sure about rotting rubbish though!). You could always drop a drop of essential oil in at the end of everyday?

but a hearty congratulations from me, for 1 bag of rubbish for 5 of you.
I get so fed up of picking out stuff that dh has thrown away that I tend to give up towards bin collection day and get lazy myself.

Do you just buy stuff with less packaging, recycle, burn stuff or just find creative ways to use up packaging? I'd love some inspiration.

My biggest thing is plastic yogurt pots. I don't want to compromise on the brand I buy and I'm too lazy to make the amount we get through......

Do you wrap up your non compost food waste (bits of fat and chicken bones) in newspaper? That helps quite a bit. We have reduced our landfill to 3/4 bag per week or less for 4 of us so I'm quite pleased too. Nextdoor put out more than us and there are only 2 of them. There are still things I would like to recycle but can't - tetra pak for instance (not that I buy many cartons) and plastic that the council wont recycle. Anyway at least we are all trying to do our bit.

We do compost everything possible -(I think ) so I'm not quite sure what makes the smell

Perhaps I need to do a bin audit every week - deep joy on with the marigolds (I don't really have marigolds...)

This may sound a bit odd ..... but ... I empty all the bins in the house and yes, I do a bin audit as I sort into paper, plastic, compost etc. The kids then get gentle hints about waste etc. There,I said it was a bit odd...

Thanks mg - it still feels like I'm on my own a lot of the time, shouting "t-bags in the compost" and "put the milk carton in the recyling box"

We recycle any plastic,glass,paper/carboard and cans (dog food). I keep any plastic containers that are a bit more solid for my "useful" cupboard (things that I think may one day be useful). Everthing organic, and crumpled paper goes in the compost.

I'm getting a bit obsessed with the bin - I loathe putting things in it , but I think there's some fly tipping going on Not sure about yoghurt pots - think we do bin them (we don't have that many)
Lidl sell orange juice in bottles which is georgeous, (cheap too) and cuts down the tetra packs.

Don't know whether that helps at all

A few holes in the bottom and use them for seedlings?

We're very lucky here in Ceredigion (our part of it at least - can't speak for elsewhere) because the Council are very pro-recyling and so we are given (for free) three rolls of different coloured bags for all refuse. 'Clear' for all items that can be recycled; 'Green' for all waste that can be composted; 'Black' for anything that doesn't fit into the two first categories. Then you put all the bags out on a Monday morning and the Council collect and sort it according to the bags. It has apparently been a great success. We only put out a small black bag each week I have to say, the clear ones are always full to brimming and we never need to use the green ones!

Presumably you have to put the green bags in the black ones then?

Penny if you have woodburner ,then I suggest you burn the bones and meat scraps .I do just that.
It will be meat and veg that gets smelly .The veg peelings are probably going on your compost anyway.

Cooked veg scraps can go in the the woodburner too, if you don't want to encourage rats on your compost heap.

I rinse out any yukky tins before putting them in the bin(although don't use that many nowadays) . I sprinkle bi carb in the bin too.

My neighbour uses Dustbin Powder.I think she buys it in Wilkinsons or somewhere like that. It's made specially for pongy dustbins.Im afraid I have no idea what it is made of except it is a dry powder that she sprinkles in her bin. I suppose ground charcoal would help if you could find somewhere to get it.
