If the horse meat content in the fast foods, burgers or whatever was labelled correctly, IE contains horse meat, what would be your reaction? Would you buy it in full knowledge of what you are eating? Seems like it is an issue of fraud, not a health issue, because that would cause some upset and perhaps panic. sg

Could have the makings of an interesting poll. I wouldn't buy a Tesco or Findus economy ready meal under any circumstance, but I might eat a home cooked horse curry. I've heard that chips cooked in horse fat are very good too.

I deliberately ordered a horse steak in a restaurant in calais because I wanted to try t, the but I had was absolutely awful so I will give it another go when I can to check it wasn't just an off steak so yes, I would buy it if it was,fabled ok. I make it a point to try different things, I have had ostrich, crocodile, boar, pigeon, squirrel and carp amongst other things.

I'd buy properly labelled and traced horse as I would beef, lamb, etc; NOT the dosed-up-on-bute-old-nags currently in circulation.

It's a very grave health issue as we have no idea what the horses were given by way of veterinary drugs, we don't know if they were passed as being fit for human consumption and likewise we don't know whether any beef of the same provenance has reached the same, or any other products.

The effects of the drugs don't even have to be enough to kill or otherwise harm you but they could add to serious issues such as antibiotic resistance which is becoming a serious problem in both human and veterinary medicine. The lack of records mean we have no evidence for or against these things, unless we start an extensive and very expensive array of tests on all our food.

I had not thought of a poll. Add one if you think it will add something to the thread.

It appears that the Government are making a fuss over the mis-labeling, and fraud issues, not the fact that a product contains horse meat.

I am not sure if I have eaten horse meat in France. Not sure I have any objections to it in principle?

Edit to add I agree with the supposed health concerns over Bute and veterinary drugs etc.

I'll have a steak or a roast but I'll pass on the mass produced burger even if it is correctly labelled.

I've eaten it in the past, in France, but I wouldn't now, not unless I was desperate. (I was quite desperate at the time but not a horse owner, just a rider). I'm as close, if not closer, to some of the horses as the dogs and I wouldn't eat one of those either.

(This is why I wonder if I could ever really be a small holder. I'm OK with dispatching wild things (rabbits and pheasants), but if it were a creature I knew, I'm not so sure. I'd probably end up just adding further species to my off limits list

)

Edit: I have no objection to others eating horse, so long as the horses were humanely treated right up until the end, and in a way familiar to them (I'm thinking pet / leisure / riding / companion animals suddenly treated like farm animals).

the risks are more than 'supposed' I would say. if the meat cannot be traced then there is no knowing it was fit for human consumption,

in answer to the original question, no i would not eat horse by choice - I've had it before and it was tough as old boots and nothing like as nice as beef.

As that's a sample of one, I'd blame the restaurant and that sample. Most french cooking is luicrously far below french cooking's reputation and the french would get really annoyed if you point out that they really can't cook. Which probably sounds like a bit of a dig at the french but my experience is that all the worst service and some of the worst meals I have ever had have all been in France.

Would I buy horse steak if it was so labelled. Of course I would, why on earth not? The only issue is the labelling which raises general questions over the trust one can place in a product, there's no suggestion of any health issues from eating horse meat and it's difficult to see how it's morally any different to eating beef.

I try and make it a rule not to buy any mass produced meat, but I would not rule out horse meat on a species basis.

Agreed. No problem with horse per se, just with rubbish horse.

I would quite happily eat horse as long as it's not in ready meal form.
