My dad has decided he wants a bigger monitor and has asked my opinion...
I don't have one, so I thought I'd ask here: any top tips on good makes, or what to avoid?

Apple monitors are always good if you like Apple. I dare say you'll be introducing limitations in a while which will preclude the pricier models.

Why?

How about ctrl+?

Its just that graphic designers wax lyrical about the billions of pixels on an Apple screen, but mere mortals get by on your typical laptop screen.

I did once work with two programmers who were actually registered blind, but they managed with the good old terminal type screens, 120 chars across IIRC.

Because he can.

All that does is focus on a smaller area of your work.

Are you suggesting that a bigger screen would not have made it easier for them?

I've had an Acer one for a good number of years now. Nice picture, good price and still going strong. Can also recommend LG one's as well. Again good price and good picture.

Just to throw another idea in, I routinely use a pair of monitors which works differently. Depends what he actually wants to see, I suppose.

I have a 24" Samsung, and it's superb. 1920 x 1200.

I suggested that: still requires getting another monitor.

"Superb" is a word anyone with 24" would be familiar with.

my samsung is about 20" and rather nice but iirc it was a bit over £100 i use it as the image screen and keep the tools on the laptop

a pal of mine who games a lot has a 40 " screen that makes me giddy,i recon size matters until it is so big it hurts

Yes, but it almost doesn't matter what that is. Grab one off Freecycle, and see if it suits. There are regular size ones almost daily down here.
