Dustbins for rhubarb, car tyres for potatoes, plastic crates from supermarkets..................

What other original and unique ideas have you utilised or thought about?

I have been made to throw them out as I cannot fit them in this year - but popcorn boxes to start of your corn in!

Old metal colanders and sieves to do lettuce and herbs. Large sacks from animal feed hidden inside slightly decrepit wicker log baskets that someone had put out for the bins.

Polystyrene fish boxes - I have a huge one which I might add a growbag to - the smell does go after several months

Not a container, but I'm currently using an old car dog guard as a pea support (well it would be supporting the peas if they had grown that far, but you know what I mean).

washing machine drums - I have 2 one with a gooseberry bush in and one for runner beans. Also have the bottom half of an old hoover as a pot and last year used an ol dishwasher case to grow carrots in

I was wondering today about making raised beds out of those plastic things that slot together to chuck bricks down into skips on building sites.

Hows this for a lateral thought. Grow plants in plant pots. Plants, as supplied by nurseries are grown in big strong plastic pots, up to 70 litres in size. A 2 metre tall Leylandii will probably come in a 20 litre pot. Phone your local landscape gardener and ask if he's got any pots to get rid of. My lettuces are in 7.5 and 10l pots, tomatoes, peppers and cues in 15l pots, 20l is a good size for a spud.

About half my veg plot consists of polystyrene boxes that meat comes in - ask a local restaurant, or fish market (or order your meat in bulk!)

I take old flip top bins out of skips & cut the base off around 1 foot up. This gives a square container with roughly 2 gallon volume, very good for cherry tomatoes & other fast growing annuals. The top half (now a square tube) I use as a potato barrel- harvesting is easy by just sharply pulling the tube upwards- spuds harvested out of the bottom.
